Southampton on the hunt for a new head coach following the sacking of Russell Martin

Southampton parted ways with manager Russell Martin after a 5-0 defeat to Tottenham left the club nine points adrift of Premier League safety.

The 38-year-old led Saints to success in the Premier League last season, securing promotion with a memorable play-off final victory over Leeds at Wembley.

However, this campaign has been a stark contrast, with Southampton losing 13 of their 16 league matches so far.

The team’s only league win this season came against Everton in November, and they have struggled to find the net, scoring just 11 goals – the lowest in the division.

In a statement, Southampton said: “Going into the season, we all knew the challenges we would face this year as we readjusted to life in the top flight, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world.

“However, the reality of our situation is clear. The board has supported Russell and his staff and has been open and transparent about our expectations.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for all the hard work and dedication they have given the club on and off the pitch over the last 18 months.

“Everyone associated with Southampton FC will always have fantastic memories of last season, especially the play-off final win in May.”

The club’s under-21 manager Simon Rusk has been appointed as interim head coach and will oversee the senior side starting with their Carabao Cup quarter-final clash against Premier League leaders Liverpool on Wednesday.

Martin’s departure coincides with other managerial exits in the Premier League, as Wolves also announced the sacking of Gary O’Neill on the same day.

Southampton’s struggles in the top flight this season have underlined the difficulties of adjusting to life back in the Premier League, and the club will now look for a new direction to revive their survival hopes.
