A US citizen of Russian descent who has already been jailed in Russia for bribery has been sentenced to a second 15-year prison term for espionage, Russian news agencies reported on Tuesday.

Moscow court charged with espionage against Gene Spector in August 2023, although details surrounding the case have not been made public.

Spector, whose Russian name is Yevgeny Mironovich, local news agencies reported, was born in 1972 in Leningrad.

A former executive at a Russian medical equipment company, Spector was previously sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison in September 2022 for facilitating a bribe to an aide to former Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich.

The assistant, Anastasia Alekseyeva, was sentenced to 12 years in prison in April for accepting bribes in the form of two expensive foreign vacation trips.

Dvorkovich was the Deputy Prime Minister during the time of Dmitry Medvedev in 2012-2018. He is currently the head of the international chess federation FIDE.

Russia has arrested and convicted numerous US dual citizens and US nationals in recent years. Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was convicted of espionage in July and released in August as part of a prisoner exchange along with former US Marine Paul Whelan.
