There are two kinds of good television shows: the kind that millions of people watch and talk about and the ones that just don’t make it into the larger cultural conversation. In the case of the latter, it is not due to lack of competence. It’s just that not every good TV series finds its fandom.
So you’d be forgiven for missing one — if not all — of the best series that premiered last year. After all, with countless networks in different formats (broadcast, cable, streaming, etc.) all looking to enter the original content game, there is a lot of TV to turn on -is through. Some of these are worse than others; some of them many even worse. Fortunately, we’ve done the heavy lifting and taken the guesswork out of it for you. Below are our picks for the best TV shows you may have missed in 2024.
After the Flood
Whatever you think After the Flood so, you might be wrong—or at least missing a big part of the series’ appeal. After a torrential flood left much of the Yorkshire town of Waterside under water, police officer Jo Marshall (Peaky Blinders‘ Sophie Rundle) was called to a parking garage, where a man’s body was found trapped in an elevator, probably drowned. But when the authorities learn that the unknown man was killed three days before the flood, Jo will do anything to put the name of the body in the morgue. If he makes the bad decision to enter his DNA into the ancestry database, he knows that the person who must have been breathing just 72 hours ago would have been dead for years. For Jo, who is a week from giving birth, it’s a race to find the killer before motherhood arrives. And, in doing so, realizes that not everyone—even those closest to him—are who or what they say they are. Good news for those who gave it a watch: After the Flood has been renewed for a second season.
Criminal Record
Peter Capaldi plays against type as Daniel Hegarty, a veteran detective nearing the end of an impressive career whose legacy may be on the line. When an anonymous tipster provides some shocking information that casts doubt on the verdict on a high-profile, decades-old case Hegarty has been working on, he’d rather think he got it all right the first time. . What he doesn’t expect is the detective June Lenker (Cush Jumbo) who receives the same information and plans to retrace Hegarty’s steps, putting the two in dire straits. The ever charming Capaldi has found a wonderful sparring partner in Jumbo. A second season is already in the works.
Diarra From Detroit
Diarra Brickland (Diarra Kilpatrick) is a teacher coming out of a painful divorce who finally feels like she’s ready to re-enter the dating scene—or at least have fun on Tinder. What she doesn’t expect to find is Chris (Shannon Wallace), a man with serious soulmate potential. When he stops hearing from her completely after a glorious night together, Diarra insists that he’s gone, because there’s no way he’s ghosting her…right? Her closest friends are skeptical, but Diarra continues to find her man—and soon finds herself embroiled in Detroit’s extremely dangerous criminal underworld. Did we mention this is a joke? Kilpatrick is a force of nature on this BET+ series, which he created and executive produces (with Kenya Barris).
Lost Boys & Fairies
We know Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer isn’t the final word on quality. But that’s saying something Lost Boys & Fairies has a perfect 100 percent score (based on half a dozen critical reviews, but still). After nearly a decade together, Gabriel (Sion Daniel Young) and Andy (Fra Fee) decide they’re ready to take the leap into parenthood. But as they officially begin the adoption process, Gabe—whose own childhood was marked by the trauma of his mother’s death and a strained relationship with his homophobic father—worries that he might not deserve, or deserve, to be loving parents. . It’s a powerful, poignant reminder that the bonds that bind us can also tear us apart.
Manhunt
Even if you didn’t pay attention in your third grade history class, you probably know the basics about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln at the hands of John Wilkes Booth. but Manhunt not part of the service level history; quite the opposite. Becca (Suranne Jones) and Rosaline (Eve Best) are once close sisters who have been separated for many years, because time, space, and circumstances have changed them both. When their mother is suddenly found dead on the Isle of Man, they must work together—no matter how quickly—to identify her body and bring it back to Great Britain, where their father is waiting for her. While the two brothers are confused as to what their mother was doing on the island in the first place, they soon learn about the many buried chapters in their mother’s history that brought her to this place. Jones (Gentleman Jack) and Best (House of the Dragon) is never better than if they were just the two of them, brothers, good or bad.
Mister Spade
Clive Owen joins a long list of formidable actors, from Humphrey Bogart to Tom Wilkinson, to inhabit the role of Sam Spade—Dashiell Hammett’s famous private detective. In this case, Mister Spade takes place in the early 1960s, two decades after the events of The Maltese Falconand Spade decided to retire to the beautiful town of Bozouls in the South of France. But when a group of nuns are brutally murdered in a nearby convent, Spade must put on his detective hat once again to solve the crime.
My Lady Jane
With a tone that is quite reminiscent The GreatGemma Burgess’ My Lady Jane Reimagines the life of Lady Jane Gray (Emily Bader) through a somewhat supernatural lens. Yes, in this version of 16th-century England, shape-shifters abound —which only heightens the weirdness. But at its heart, My Lady Jane is about the new romance between Jane and Lord Guildford Dudley (Edward Bluemel), whom Jane’s mother arranged for her to marry. Unfortunately, we only get eight episodes of this series, as Amazon announced its cancellation after an incredible season.
The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh
lost Star Naveen Andrews gets to use his stellar comedic chops in this darkly funny tale of the American Dream gone wrong. When such a great business opportunity arises, Pradeep family patriarch Mahesh (Andrews) moves his family from India to America, where culture shock is the least of their problems. By the time we meet the family, they’ve been living in Pittsburgh for two years—and are telling their story to a pair of federal agents (Pete Holmes and Romy Rosemont) from the US Immigration and Naturalization Service, because they are also suspected of possibly burning down the house of their snobby neighbors (Megan Hilty and Ethan Suplee). The most amazing part of all is that the story is partly based on the real life of creator Vijal Patel.
sugar
The small screen is good for Colin Farrell this year, especially with the success of The Penguin. But five months before resuming his role as Oz Cobb, the Oscar-nominated actor turned neo-noir for sugar. In the stylish crime-drama Farrell plays John Sugar, a private detective hired to investigate the disappearance of the granddaughter of a big-time Hollywood producer while grappling with some personal issues. demon himself. If you’ve heard of the show, you probably know there’s a twist (more than one of them, actually). A second season has been confirmed.
The rebel Nell
Sally Wainwright has never been known as a creator of “family-friendly” fare—unless your kids think binge-watching is Happy Valley an all-ages event. But he is the creative force behind it The rebel Nell makes sense once you watch even the first episode. After being framed for murder, Nell Jackson (Louisa Harland) becomes one of England’s most feared highwaywomen. It’s all a bluff, of course, but Nell realizes that the best way to clear her name is to lean into the fame that surrounds her and have fun with it. Harland is a joy to watch (even if you know there’s no Season 2 on the menu).
