Revenge Most Fowl Brings Computer Trickery to Classic Claymation


Technology has always been a funny thing in the world of Wallace and Gromit—where Wallace’s wacky inventions, from literal spaceships to remote-controlled robo-trousers, sit alongside a classically low-fi vision of Britain. That is also the case with manufacturing Wallace and Gromit at Aardman too, as the studio championed traditional hand-animated features even as it dipped its toes into CGI assistants and full 3D projects over its long history. When Aardman returns to Wallace and Gromit for the first time in 16 years on the horizon with Revenge Most Fowlyou can see a glimpse of how the studio is balanced the traditional and the contemporary in this little snippet from the film’s new artbook.

Due December 31 from Titan Books, The Art of Wallace & Gromit: Revenge Most poultry—written by Richard Hansom, the first development producer Wallace and Gromit TV show A Matter of Bread and Death—takes you behind the scenes of the development process for Aardman’s long-awaited return to its most iconic creationsconsists of returning to Wrong Pants‘ beloved villain Feathers McGraw and more in a series of cast and crew interviews, and tons of behind-the-scenes looks at the making of the film, from the first concept art by Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park himself, right down to stills featuring the legions of land models created for the film.

It’s an effect that animators can only replicate completely in post-production VFX, but as you can see in the spread above, animator Sean Gregory used an in-camera effect instead: a tiny little model scaled projector that illuminates the landscape of. plays a file of animated code graphics that can be timed to shoot stop-motion elements. A fitting combination of computer and hand-animation that even Wallace would appreciate!

The Art of Wallace & Gromit: Revenge Most poultry will be released by Titan Books December 31, after Revenge Most Fowl will premiere in the UK and Ireland on Christmas Day—ahead of its international release on Netflix January 3.
