You Have To Wait About 28 Weeks for the 28 Years Later Sequel

You don’t have to wait 28 years for the sequel 28 Years Later. In fact, you only have to wait about 28 weeks. Sony just announced that the sequel to Danny Boyle’s 2025 zombie sequel will be released on January 16, 2026. It is called 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple and, as we once knewit was directed by Nia DaCosta.

That’s a lot of numbers and dates so let’s reset here. In 2002, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland made a zombie film called 28 Days Later. The film was a hit and, in 2007, we got a sequel called 28 Weeks Later. That was fine but the franchise went quiet for a while until Garland, himself a famous director, came up with a new idea. that movie, 28 Years Lateris set to be released on June 20, 2025 and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes. The trailer was released recently and very successful, Sony picked up the original for digital release.

28 Years Later created to be the first film in the zombie trilogy however that’s why Sony quickly hired Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels) to make its sequel. It was the first film that didn’t change the time frame, adding a subtitle: “The Bone Temple,” whatever that means. Any details about the third part are still a mystery at this point.

After years of waiting for these sequels, however, the release of two films 30 weeks apart (six and a half months, basically) is exciting. That kind of thing doesn’t happen very often these days (or, even if it’s the plan, it’s usually canceled) so we’ll see how it goes.

No word on the plot The Bone Temple because, frankly, we don’t know much about the plot of 28 Years Later yet. But rumor has it that original star Cillian Murphy, an Oscar winner who made these films, won’t appear in any major way until the second film in the series.
