CM Punk nearly ruined Roman Reigns’ WWE career thanks to podcast
CM Punk appeared on the scene after being fired from WWE on his wedding day in 2014 The Art of Wrestling Podcast and his best friend at the time, Colt Cabana. More than a decade later, the episode continues to evolve and influence the landscape of professional wrestling.
For what Punk said about Reigns…it wasn’t really too inflammatory, was it? Punk’s issues with Reigns stemmed from the promotion’s inability to tell Punk to “make him look tough,” but Punk wasn’t attacking Reigns’ ability or integrity. He originally wanted Chris Hero to join The Shield instead of Reigns, but he didn’t object to the decision. What upset Punk was that officials emphasized the importance of having him in the ring in a match where Reigns won.
“‘You’ve got to make Roman look really, really strong.’ I was like, ‘No, I’m just going to hit them hard and beat them up.’ Like yeah, I get it, okay. When we were getting ready for the match, people would come up to me every two minutes. ‘Hey, you’ve got to make him look tough.’ “I just had enough and finally I said, ‘You know what would make him look tough? If they beat me.'” – CM Punk The art of wrestling podcast.
“Make him look really strong,” was a philosophy Roman Reigns stuck to throughout his career, which led to him fighting an uphill battle with audiences for five years. At this year’s WrestleMania 42, Reigns sought revenge on the man who created him, even though Reigns didn’t want to admit it.
