With ‘Scream 7’ Coming, Its Studios Are Fighting to Own Ghostface’s… Uh, Face

Scream 7 is in theaters at the end of this month, and the promo game is slowly building. While Sidney Prescott fighting another Ghostface or twoFranchise owners Paramount and Spyglass are in a legal battle over the rights to the villain’s iconic mask.

Per the Hollywood Reporterthe two companies took SFX studio Alterian Ghost Factory to court before it could threaten copyright infringement. With this lawsuit, Paramount and Spyglass hope to file a court order to stop Alterian’s lawsuit, claiming that the company “intentionally slept on its rights to the iconic ‘Ghostface’ mask used throughout the Scream franchise for 30 years.”

The Ghostface mask was created for Halloween in the early ’90s by Fun World and was later discovered by Yelling producer Marianne Maddalena. It was later licensed for film and featured throughout the franchise and its various sequels, with the one exception being the MTV show. Alterian argued that because it created the underlying design first, Fun World was in legal error when it licensed the final version to Paramount. On the contrary, Paramount believed that Fun World deserved Alterian’s wrath and that Alterian had lost any right to claim ownership of Ghostface after spending decades without taking legal action.

“(It) has not been legally established that it owns the rights to the Ghostface mask, and it cannot be proven now in this litigation,” reads Paramount’s complaint. “And trying to derail the release of a complete motion picture just weeks before its release — the seventh installment in a franchise that Alterian has watched quietly for three decades — is a terrible attempt to shake things up (Paramount and Spyglass).”

Scream 7 is in theaters on February 27, and the legal battle for Ghostface may continue beyond that date.
