Start with food waste Mill said on Tuesday that it had signed an agreement with Amazon to deploy its garbage cans of Whole Foods is producing departments across the country starting in 2027. Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund is also investing in the startup, although it did not disclose the amount. The company has raised a total of $250 million to date, ACCORDING in an Axios report.
Food waste is a big problem. About 10% of all food – 43 billion pounds, according to one 2014 study – tossed every year in US grocery stores. For an industry operating in the thin marginsevery pound thrown away is a lost opportunity and adds to a store’s carbon footprint.
Mill hopes its sensor-laden bins will collect enough data to help Whole Foods reduce the amount of produce it throws away. After the bins are dehydrated and the food waste is ground, the waste is turned into chicken feed that is sent to Whole Foods’ private label egg suppliers.
