HBO’s third season The Last of Us is in the works, which we already know. What we don’t know is whether the show beyond that point, and recent comments by HBO head Casey Bloys didn’t help.
As part of a long interview about HBO in general (some of the that we have it covered), The deadline Bloys asked how much gas was in the tank. He told the outlet that it was “definitely like that,” but ultimately said the answer rests with showrunner Craig Mazin. Intentional or not, this is more of a non-answer than anything else of importance though one that may not be as true as it sounds on the face of it.
Last year, Mazin talked about adaptation The Last of Us Part II be a three time effortand said that trying to tie the two together would “take forever.” Although he suggested that one solution would be to just make a longer season three, he acknowledged that the writing team is planning ahead if the extended season doesn’t wrap things up for whatever reason. “We really try to think about things fundamentally,” he said at the time. “We’re thinking ahead to season three and season four, to try to get as much visibility as we can. (…) The challenge of season two is, ‘Okay, this source material will go beyond one season.'”
The Last of Us Part II there are a lot of moving pieces to its story, and it’s a long game compared to its predecessor. If the show takes too long to adapt, it won’t that surprisingly, though it may rank among long-time fans and TV-only fans. For now, don’t worry about when it will end, when it will return—which is currently until 2027…hopefully the first seasons won’t change.
