Below is information about upcoming services.
Where is the funeral held?
Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, will be honored with a state funeral on January 9 in Washington, DC.
The former president’s family accepted Carter’s invitation Monday to be laid to rest in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda and to hold a funeral service at Washington National Cathedral.
Carter’s body will be stored in the Capitol starting on the afternoon of January 7 and will remain there until the morning of January 9. The building will be open to the public at “designated times” for those wishing to pay their respects.
President Joe Biden said in an executive order that the U.S. federal government will be closed on January 9 as a national day of mourning “to show respect for James Earl Carter Jr.”
Will there be other ceremonies?
The state funeral was not the only funeral for the 39th president.
On January 4, a motorcade will drive through Carter’s hometown of Plains, Georgia, stopping at his childhood home before heading to Atlanta for a public service at the Carter Presidential Center.
Carter’s body will be deposited at the Presidential Library on January 5 and January 6.
After funerals in Georgia and Washington, D.C., the former president will be laid to rest in a private ceremony in Plains.
Who will attend the state funeral?
According to Biden, at the request of the 39th President in March 2023, Biden will deliver the eulogy at Carter’s funeral in Washington, DC.
Former presidents and first ladies typically attend their predecessors’ funerals, so others such as first lady Jill Biden and former President Barack Obama may be in attendance. Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton are also expected to attend.
President-elect Donald Trump’s plans are unclear. He did not attend Rosalynn Carter’s funeral last year, but his wife Melania and other former first ladies did.
Trump did, however, attend the 2018 funeral in Washington for George H.W. Bush, the last former president to die.
