New West Ham United head coach Graham Potter has been dealt a serious injury blow as Nicklas Fulkrug will be out of action for up to three months.
The 31-year-old striker went down after clutching his hamstring during the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the third round on Friday night. The FA Cup and left the field in obvious discomfort.
Fulcrug eventually had to be helped down the tunnel by West Ham’s medical team, leaving Potter and the club’s supporters sweating over the extent of the issue.
Potter, designated as Substitute for Julen Lopetegui On Thursday, told reporters after the match: “I would imagine it’s a very serious hamstring injury when you pull up like that so it’s a concern for us.”
Sky Sport Germany A scan report carried out on Saturday showed Potter had every right to be scared, with Fulcrug set for a long spell – the second time he has been out injured for a significant period after picking up an Achilles tendon issue at international level. Duty with Germany in September.
West Ham may be forced to dip into the transfer market now that they are already missing captain Jarrod Bowen, who fractured his leg recently. 5-0 defeat against Liverpooland Michael Antonio, who is recovering from multiple injuries – including a broken leg – sustained in a fatal car accident before Christmas.
32-year-old Danny Ings could be included in the squad as a short-term move, but his record of four goals in 47 Premier League appearances West Ham Potter is unlikely to be convinced that is the answer moving forward.
Mohamed Qudus could also be deployed centrally in a false nine role, although West Ham could consider retaining him on the wing if Crescencio Summerville’s niggle in Friday’s defeat proves anything to go by.
