Washington Sundar’s availability for T20 World Cup depends on medical clearance: Team India is one of the favorites for the 2026 T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka. They were one of the strongest looking teams in the tournament. As the match will be held at their home ground, Suryakumar Yadav’s side will face Team USA on February 7 for the title. Post the 2024 World Cup, India has won 26 of the last 36 T20I bilateral series.
However, India suffered serious scars ahead of the big event. Washington Sundar, the team’s star all-rounder, is yet to recover from a rib injury he sustained during the ODI match between India and New Zealand at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara. He has been named to the Men in Blue’s 15-man roster for the major tournament.
Washington Sundar not fully recovered yet
With just days to go before the World Cup kicks off, his health remains a concern for the team. As per previous reports, it is believed that Sundar may undergo a fitness test at the BCCI Center of Excellence on February 4, 2026. The management is yet to announce a replacement for the all-rounder as they await an official medical report on his fitness.

Reports recently suggested that the Tamil Nadu cricketer has made significant progress in his recovery, completing four batting sessions. On February 2, he bowled four overs in a live bowling event. Tomorrow, he plans to bowl again to see if his fracture can handle the stress. After that, a decision will be made on how the recovery will proceed and whether he will be fit for the World Cup.

Tilak Varma returns to the sidelines
The Indian team missed key player Tilak Varma in the New Zealand series, and now he is back and was selected for the India A team that played a warm-up match against the United States last night. He scored 38 points off 24 balls and looked in good shape. He recently won the game for the team in the shortest game.
Who will replace Washington Sundar?
If Washington Sundar fails to regain fitness, a number of players can replace him, including Ravi Bishnoi, who performed well in the recently concluded series against New Zealand. Apart from him, Shreyas Iyer in the team can also be integrated into the team. India have three spinners besides Sundar, Varun Chakaravarthy, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav.
