Utah Gov. Spencer Cox told the U.S. media that Charlie Kirk’s so-called killer did not “cooperate” with the authorities and did not admit to the shooting.
Kirk, a 31-year-old right-wing activist, was shot dead on Wednesday after the suspect Tyler Robinson, was detained for about 33 hours.
Speech to ABC NewsCox, a Republican, said people around Mr. Robinson have been working with the investigation.
Cox appeared in various U.S. news outlets Sunday morning and reiterated his concerns about social media after Kirk’s death.
The governor was also asked New York Times Report Mr Robinson had a conversation with others through the shooting of the Disharmonious Message Platform, including allegations that he joked about becoming a gunman.
Cox told ABC News: “All we can confirm is that these conversations are certainly happening and they don’t think it’s actually him.
“That was kidding until he knew, until he admitted it was actually him.”
Mr. Robinson was arrested Thursday night after surrendering to police.
Kirk speaks at an open-air event held by the organization he co-founded when he was shot, the organization he co-founded when he was shot.
The event was part of the U.S. comeback tour, a speech that brought him to several U.S. university campuses.
Cox had previously told the Wall Street Journal that Utah native Mr. Robinson “has deeply instilled leftist ideology.”
When this was questioned during CNN’s ITU program on Sunday, he said the information was provided by friends and family of the suspect.
“There is a lot more we are learning and we will learn a lot,” he explained, adding that when official charges are filed, there will be “more evidence and information available.”
The governor said the person who worked with the authorities was Mr. Robinson’s roommate, who he said was his partner as well.
He said the partner had no knowledge of the alleged shooting, but was “an incredible cooperative” and was working with investigators “now.”
He also confirmed that the partner is currently “transitioning from male to female”, but when asked by CNN, authorities did not know if this is related to the investigation.
A Utah affidavit confirmed Mr. Robinson was arrested for suspected aggravated murder, felony release of firearms and obstruction of justice.
He is currently in jail in Utah.
“We’re interviewing all kinds of people – everyone who knows him – and trying to learn more about what the motivation is actually.”
After Kirk’s death, Cox called for unification to ease political tensions and repeatedly commented criticizing social media.
He used to call social media “cancer” and told CNN that the United States has “taken out the phone from the classroom” and is working better to hold platform owners accountable.
He called Kirk’s shooting a “direct attack on America” and said Americans need to “look in the mirror and decide, will we try to make it better, or will we make it worse?”
Kirk’s widow, Erika, A tear address was given on Saturday She thanked the first responders for their efforts and vowed that “the husband’s voice will remain.”
The memorial service will be held on September 21 at Arizona’s 60,000-seat State Farm Stadium, where Kirk lives with his wife and two children.
