President Trump’s advisers and Ukrainian officials said Friday they would meet for a third day of talks after making progress on creating a security framework for post-war Ukraineand call on Russia to devote itself to peace.

The officials, who met in Florida for a second day on Friday, issued a joint statement offering broad outlines of the progress they say has been made as Mr Trump pushes Kiev and Moscow to agree to a US-brokered proposal to end the nearly four-year war.

“Both sides agreed that real progress toward any agreement depends on Russia’s willingness to demonstrate a serious commitment to long-term peace, including steps toward de-escalation and an end to the killings,” the statement said. “The parties also separately reviewed the Future Prosperity Plan, which aims to support Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction, joint U.S.-Ukraine economic initiatives, and long-term recovery projects.”

The Kremlin did not immediately comment on the latest US-Ukrainian talks on Friday.

Talks by US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Mr Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner in Florida with Rustem Umerov, Ukraine’s chief negotiator, follow discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US envoys in the Kremlin on Tuesday.

“If any plan leading to a settlement is put on paper, it will be Mr. Kushner’s pen that will guide it,” Ushakov said.

The flattering comments about Kushner by a senior Russian official come as Putin seeks to sow divisions between Mr. Trump and Ukraine and Europe at a time when Mr. Trump’s impatience with the conflict is growing. Putin, who on a state visit to India on Thursdaytold an Indian media outlet that his five-hour talks with Witkoff and Kushner this week were “necessary” and “helpful,” but some suggestions were unacceptable.

Kushner, who is married to Mr Trump’s daughter Ivanka, was a senior adviser to Mr Trump during his first term and was the president’s point person for developing the Abraham Accords, which formalized commercial and diplomatic ties between Israel and the three Arab nations.

Kushner played a more informal role in Trump’s second term but helped Witkoff close the ceasefire and hostage negotiations between Israel and Hamas this fall. Mr. Trump again selected Kushner to pair with Witkoff to try to find an end to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
