Ukrainian Olympian disqualified due to helmet

Vladyslav Heraskevych, a Ukrainian skeleton competitor, has been banned from competing in the Winter Olympics because of a helmet he planned to wear that featured images of people killed in the war with Russia.

“I think and I really believe that we are here today, that we can enjoy the sport and the Olympic Games, also because of their sacrifice. And I believe that they deserve to be here today with me. And they also deserve to be with me on the day of the competition.” “I really wanted to see him race today. It was an emotional morning. So – yes. We have these rules to try to be fair and also to allow us both things: to allow athletes to express themselves, but also to allow athletes to be safe.” Journalist: “How did it feel not being able to compete?” “Awful, well, you can imagine: I’m a professional athlete and spent hours training every day for four years. Of course, as an athlete, I’ve always dreamed of an Olympic medal, and it also feels like it’s been taken away from me.”
