The U.S. government is in gridlock amid anger over the killings of two people by federal agents during a crackdown on immigrants in Minneapolis.

Senate leaders said the legislation approved Friday would significantly increase the likelihood that the government shutdown will end quickly, possibly within days.

“Technically, there will be a partial government shutdown at midnight on Saturday,” Al Jazeera’s Rosiland Jordan said, reporting from Washington, DC.

“The House could take up these changes approved by the U.S. Senate as early as Friday night, not before Monday. That’s because they’ve been on recess this week. They should be back in Washington this weekend,” Jordan said.

“The Trump administration’s current assumption behind the compromise bill that passed the Senate on Friday is that this can all be resolved quickly by early next week,” she said.

But there are also concerns that the shutdown could drag on longer given the political polarization surrounding President Donald Trump’s administration’s harsh immigration raids and the killing of U.S. citizens in those operations.

“So there’s an expectation that this issue will probably be resolved early next week. But it’s also possible that it won’t,” Jordan added.

Two U.S. citizens, Alex Pretti and Renee Good, were shot dead by federal agents in two separate incidents in the northern city this month, sparking Democratic anger over aggressive immigration enforcement and sparking a funding standoff. The killings in Minneapolis have become a flashpoint, heightening opposition to approving new funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) without changing how the immigration agency operates.

Lawmakers approved five pending appropriations bills to fund much of the federal government through the end of the fiscal year in September, under a deal negotiated by the White House and Senate Democratic leaders.

The Senate-approved deal separates funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees immigration agencies, from broader government funding plans, allowing lawmakers to approve spending by agencies such as the Pentagon and Labor Department while considering new restrictions on how federal immigration agencies operate.

Funding for the Department of Homeland Security has now been split and extended just two weeks under a stopgap measure designed to give lawmakers time to negotiate on the department’s operations.

Senate Democrats are threatening to shelve the funding package entirely in an effort to force President Trump to take control of the Department of Homeland Security and his immigration crackdown.

Democrats want to end immigration patrols, require immigration agents to wear body cameras and ban them from wearing masks.

They also want to require immigration agents to obtain search warrants from judges rather than their own officers.

Republicans say they are open to some of the ideas.

Many US media interpreted the White House’s flexibility as an admission that a crackdown on immigration needed to be eased in the wake of the Minneapolis massacre.
