Just days after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned against economic coercion from the world’s superpowers in a speech in Davos, US President Donald Trump has withdrawn his invitation to Canada to join his “peace council.”
“Dear Prime Minister Carney: Please let this letter represent the Peace Council’s revocation of your invitation to Canada to join,” Trump wrote in an article published Thursday night in the stateside Truth Social.

While Carney did not name any country, Trump later responded on the sidelines of the forum, saying, “Canada exists because of the United States. Mark, please remember that the next time you make a statement.”

Carney said in his speech that recent events show that the “rules-based international order” is effectively dead and that the world’s superpowers “use economic integration as a weapon of coercion to pursue their own interests.”
Relations between the two long-time allies have faced severe tensions during Trump’s second term, with Trump calling the nation the 51st state in addition to imposing tariffs on the neighboring country.

The Peace Council, chaired by Trump, was originally conceived to oversee the demilitarization and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip after two years of war with Israel. But Trump said he expected the council to have a broader role that could eventually rival that of the United Nations, a role that alarmed several U.S. allies.
Trump has received support from Middle East countries such as Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, as well as emerging economies such as Indonesia.
But several global powers and America’s traditional Western allies have more cautiousSome countries, including Australia, France, Germany, Italy, etc., have rejected this proposal.
