President Donald Trump said the United States has begun talking to Cuban leaders as his administration puts more pressure on communist-ruled island and cut off vital oil supplies.
He made the comments to reporters on Saturday night as he flew to Florida. It follows his moves in recent weeks to cut off oil supplies from Venezuela and Mexico, which he suggested on Saturday would force Cuba to the negotiating table.
His intentions in Cuba remain unclear, but Trump has turned his attention to the island after his administration in early January captured the President of Venezuela. Nicolas Maduro and became more aggressive in dealing with countries hostile to the US
Trump predicted that the Cuban government is ready to fall.
The Republican president did not provide any details Saturday about what level of outreach his administration has done in Cuba recently or when, but simply said, “We are starting to talk to Cuba.”
His recent moves to cut off its oil supplies have squeezed the island.
This past week, Trump signed an executive order that would impose tariffs on any goods from countries that sell or supply oil to Cuba. The move puts pressure on Mexico, which Cuba relies on for oil after Trump halted oil shipments from Venezuela following Maduro’s ouster.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum warned that this could lead to a humanitarian crisis. He said on Friday that he would look for alternatives to continue aid to Cuba.
“It doesn’t have to be a humanitarian crisis. I think they might come to us and want to make a deal,” Trump said on Saturday. “So Cuba is free again.”
He predicted they would make some kind of deal with Cuba and said, “I think, you know, we’ll be nice.”
