president Donald Trump He said on Thursday that he would nominate a new chairman of the Federal Reserve on Friday.

Speaking at the premiere of “Melania,” the film about first lady Melania Trump, the president said the process that began last summer to find a replacement for current Chairman Jerome Powell was coming to an end.

“Tomorrow morning I’m going to announce who will be the chairman of the Federal Reserve,” Trump said. When asked if he had actually made his choice, he responded: “Yeah, I’m better, otherwise I’d have to go to work soon.”

The process of deciding on Powell’s successor began in September with 11 candidates, including former and current Fed officials, economists and Wall Street investment professionals. Finance Minister Scott Bessant sifts through qualified candidates, slimming down list reduced to five Then four.

The final four are believed to be former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, current Fed Governor Christopher Waller and BlackRock fixed income chief investment officer Rick Reed.

Prediction markets have been betting on who will get the job. Hassett was the leader for a while, then Wash, and continued for a long time past few days Reed. However, the tables turned on Thursday night, with Kalshi now naming Warsh as the 80% favorite.

Trump added that the pick was “someone who could have been there years ago.” It is understood that Warsh was involved in the campaign when Trump decided to nominate Powell in 2017.

An administration source told CNBC that Warsh was at the White House on Thursday. However, a White House official denied this speculation.

White House spokesman Khushi Desai said: “President Trump will announce his choice for Federal Reserve Chairman at the appropriate time. Any reporting on the nomination process for Federal Reserve Chairman until then is a waste of everyone’s time.”

For his part, Powell has wavered on whether he will stay on as chairman after his term ends in May. Powell has the option to serve out the remaining two years of his term as governor.
