In his tariff and trade policy discussions, President Donald Trump spent some time meeting executives from some of the country’s top retailers, from home improvement giants Home Depot and Lowe and mass retailers Target and Walmart to discuss the impact of trade policy on the business.

While large businesses, billionaires and Wall Street often attract audiences, the streets are often excluded.

The Trump administration has repeatedly said they want to be the street first. At the American Bankers Association’s Washington Summit, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in particular: “For the next four years, Trump’s agenda is focused on the streets. It’s the street’s turn. It’s the turn of the street to hire workers. It’s the street’s turn to promote investment, and it’s the street that restores the American dream. ”

And, just as the current administration opened a press conference to include new media, the president should have a regular audience with members of the Street Small Business community.

Small businesses are big businesses For the United States, that’s why it is often called the backbone of the U.S. economy. According to small business management statistics, there are nearly 35 million small businesses, while there are less than 20,000 large businesses. Small businesses account for half of the private economy and create most of the new jobs.

But as small businesses are distributed between geographical location, demographics, industries and scale, they don’t pay much attention to Washington. NFIB (National Federation of Independent Enterprises), S Company Association, NSBA (National Small Business Association), SBE Committee (SBE Committee (Small Business and Entrepreneurs Committee), and many industry-specific organizations, as well as many other invitations, should be invited by many larger participants.

Small businesses have been fulfilling the consequences of government mandates for five years. First, poorly designed PPP plans have not been fully compensated for the state and local COVID-19 requirements for closures and negatively impacted millions of businesses.

On the back of the co-certification task, long-term disruption of supply chains and labor markets has further damaged small businesses. Historical inflation under the Biden administration then puts more pressure on small businesses and their customers.

Small company Trump administration with priority on major streets Deregulation and tax certainty are expected to help boost their business growth, while thousands of small businesses are fighting another battle imposed by the government.

Whether small businesses have a portion or full supply chain abroad, domestic suppliers are exposed to foreign supply chains, or customers who cut spending and investment due to market and economic uncertainty, they are all economically hurt.

Although big companies like Apple received temporary kickbacks in tariff exposure, China’s tariffs on smartphones, computers and chips were reduced from 145% to 20%, millions of small businesses have not received any relief. Apple has tens of billions of dollars in cash and equivalent value on its balance sheet; small businesses do not have such balance sheet leverage.

While it is important to understand the needs of companies like Apple and Walmart, it is equally important to understand the needs of small companies across the country.

Small businesses have been fulfilling the consequences of government mandates for five years. First, poorly designed PPP plans have not been fully compensated for the state and local COVID-19 requirements for closures and negatively impacted millions of businesses.

Small businesses are not able to absorb a lot of costs due to major changes in overnight policies.

In fact, almost all the small businesses I talk to want to get very little from the government and can only do business without government intervention. They want to be on the same competitive environment with everyone else and there are no barriers, regulations and challenges imposed by the government on every front.

To understand these challenges, President Trump should invite more small businesses and their advocates into the White House. If the street is to flourish, it needs to start with small businesses, and reality should keep small businesses at the table.
