Tottenham He defended his approach to the January transfer window following criticism from fans and within the team, with sporting director Johan Lang outlining the club’s rationale and insisting that the limited activity did not reflect a lack of ambition.
Captain Christian Romero Questioned the club’s direction amid a growing injury crisis, posting his frustrations on social media after the transfer deadline passed.
Speaking after the window closed, Lang tried to give supporters some context around Tottenham’s decision-making.
He described January as an unusually compressed window across European football, arguing that Tottenham were not alone in finding opportunities limited.
“I saw this window as one of the quieter January windows, not just here in the Premier League, but across football in general.
He pointed to the expanded European calendar as a key factor, with more clubs still participating in continental competitions in January, reducing player movement.
“That meant there weren’t a lot of players available across the marketplace during January,” Lang said.
“When we go into January, we didn’t expect that we would have seven injuries during the month of January.
“It’s very important, even though it’s very frustrating with all the injuries, to stay disciplined.
“If you then go in and do a stress buy of any football players, yes, the immediate feeling it gives you is great, but there is no point in signing players who are not going to help us in the short-term, medium-term or even long-term.”
He added that most injured players are expected to return later this season, reinforcing the decision to avoid reactive deals.
Lang praised the ‘very willing’ owners
Addressing suggestions that the club had failed to adequately support the squad, Lang insisted that Tottenham’s approach was shaped by financial constraints rather than a lack of desire to invest.
“Even though our financial position under the rules is better than most clubs, and we have owners who are very willing to invest, it is important that we are under those rules.
“So, it’s important that we sign the right players. I think Thomas is also very clear on the two players we want to bring in, but it wasn’t a lack of desire to invest in supporting the club’s squad.”
Lang admitted that additional signings would have been welcome in January but said the club now expected more scope for activity in the summer.
“The summer market is where eight or nine out of 10 players, they move clubs, so we will go into the summer window with big ambitions to strengthen the squad.
“We know there will be more movement, we know there will be more opportunities, so the plans are already, can you see, drawn. We have a clear picture of what positions and what profiles.
“Could we have brought one or two more in this January window? We would have been happy to do so. But that was not a possibility. So, we are looking forward to the summer, now we focus on the rest of the season and that is very important because we have big objectives.
“We are still in the Champions League. We, of course, want to be higher Premier League And then myself and others will now have their eyes on the summer transfer window.”
