The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities found at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.
Speaking at a news conference, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said there were signs in the home that indicated Nancy Guthrie did not leave on her own.
“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said.
Asked to explain why investigators believed it was a crime scene, Nanos said Nancy Guthrie had limited mobility and said there were other things that indicated she didn’t leave on her own, but declined to elaborate.
The sheriff said Nancy Guthrie, who lives alone, is of sound mind. “It’s not related to dementia. He’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this is not a lost person,” Nanos said. He said he needed his daily medication.
Nanos said in a press conference last Sunday night that Nancy Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. last Saturday at her home in the Tucson area. His family reported him missing around noon on Sunday.
Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Nancy Guthrie was not there, leading the family to look for her at her home and then call 911.
Searchers are using drones and search dogs to find Nancy Guthrie, Nanos said. The search and rescue teams are supported by volunteers and the Border Patrol and the homicide team is also involved, he said. It is not standard for the homicide team to be involved in such cases, said Nanos.
“It’s a strange one because of what was described to us on the scene and what we found just looking at the scene,” Nanos said Sunday. He did not rule out foul play.
As of Monday morning, Nanos said search crews have been working hard but have since pulled out. “We don’t see this as a search mission as much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said. Savannah Guthrie released a statement on Monday, NBC’s“Current” performance is reported.
“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” he said. “For now, our focus remains on the safe return of our beloved Nancy.”
“Today” opened Monday’s show with the absence of a co-anchor’s mother, but Savannah Guthrie was absent from the anchor desk. Nanos said during Monday’s news conference that Savannah Guthrie is in Arizona. Savannah Guthrie grew up in Tucson and graduated from the University of Arizona.
Nancy Guthrie featured in a November 2025 story her daughter did about her hometown. At one meal, Savannah asked her mother what it was like for the family to plant roots in Tucson in the 1970s.
“It’s great. Just the air, the quality of life,” Nancy said. “It’s quiet and gentle.”
He said he likes to see the javelina eating his plants.
