The Skeleton Crew Goes Full Goonies in an Adventure-Filled Episode

Lucasfilm gives its fans two gifts this holiday season: new episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. On the one hand, it’s amazing because many of us are at home and able to watch. On the other hand, it’s a little less weird if you are writing about performance for work and did not work on those days. So, that’s why this week’s recap—and next week’s—will be a day late. Our apologies.

But we like to think of those days off as a visit to the planet Lanupa. A time and place to relax, rejuvenate, and, in the case of Skeleton Crewfind a pirate’s hideout like something straight out of The Goonies. Let’s talk about the fifth episode, “There’s a Lot You Need to Know About Pirates.”

At this point, we already know what we’re getting Skeleton Crew. Each week the crew goes to a new planet to find a new clue that will help them get back to Attin. And this week is no exception. After a very quick return to the good side for the droid SM-33, he reveals the location of the Attin hidden in his old master’s vault. His name was Captain Tak Rennod, a name that immediately caught Jod’s fancy. According to him, Rennod was the most cruel pirate ever, a man who killed his entire crew in search of Attin’s treasure. In Rennod’s secret abode, located beneath Skull Ridge Mountain, the crew can find their way home.

SM-33 remembers Skull Ridge Mountain, located on the planet Lanupa, as a brutal place but now it is a luxury hotel and adults-only spa. Which is super quirky in a Star Wars feeling while also talking about how long Rennod’s adventure took. Because, let’s not forget, the kids found Rennod’s ship—finally officially confirmed to be the Onyx Cinder. even Lego told us that months ago—buried underground in Attin with all the dead. We are still very curious about what happened in all this.

After some crazy but welcome hijinks at the hotel, Jod and the crew find themselves searching the underground spas of Lanupa for Rennod’s abode. We see all kinds of cool Star Wars aliens, including a fierce, very hungry Hutt. Jod also runs into a bounty hunter named Pokkit (Kelly Macdonald from Brave and Train spotting) who knew Jod as “Dash Zentin.” That’s his fourth alias which, of course, raises more red flags about the character. Pokkit calls in his bounty and Jod’s former crew, led by Brutus, is sent to Lanupa. And so the race begins. Will the pirates find Jod and the crew or will they find shelter?

This is where Skeleton Crew FILLED Goonies. After befriending a large squid-type creature named Cthallops, they break through the land and find themselves on a booby-trapped path to treasure. You know, like when the Goonies broke through the floor and had to follow a path that trapped a treasure. Both have ground skeletons, both have liquid pools to wade through, both have anti-gravity spike chambers. No, wait, just Skeleton Crew there is that. But even so, the similarities are many, down to the actual wealth itself, which is also trapped.

as The Gooniesthe group finds that treasure room and it’s full of cool stuff. Wim even found a real lightsaber. Soon, they access a dataport and 33 finds the location of Attin and a recording of Rennod. He’s clippy, so we can’t see who he is, but the brief glimpse seems to show a cowboy hat, giving off Cad Bane vibes. Rennod’s message also revealed what, specifically, the treasure was in Attin: the last mint of the Old Republic. In other words, you can make money. (Also, the credits list Rennod’s performance as coming from Colin Follenweider, who is also Jude Law’s stunt double. Could Jod be related to Rennod? We’ll see.)

That revelation changed everything for Jod. Closer to the treasure than ever, he challenges Fern for the title of captain. He bravely tried to fight, but his strength was too strong. Then, in what is set up to be one of the unforgettable Star Wars hero moments, Wim took the lightsaber. He is about to fulfill every dream and fantasy he has ever had. But, when he lights it, it flips over and it flies. Jod tells 33 to capture the crew, but they quickly escape, while Jod grabs the lightsaber.

Our biggest takeaway from Skeleton Crew The fifth episode is how much fun this story can have. Yes, there are some moments of pause-like Wim who is lonely and his father, back in Attin, desperately trying to do something. But more than that, we love to see this group traversing the galaxy, solving puzzles, getting messy, and slowly unraveling this mystery. The mystery of why Attin is hidden, what exactly are the people doing there, and who is this pirate Force-user Jod Na Nawood? And if this means we’ll meet new aliens and hunters on more exciting new planets along the way? All the better.
