The decision of drop more teasers with Avengers: Doomsday a year before the movie came out it should have been a slam dunk. This is the first Avengers film in seven years. As expected a blockbuster as we remember recently. Everyone wants to see and learn more. but the awkward release and next answer of trailers left us scratching our heads, and now new trailers aren’t helping.
A few months ago, Avengers: Doomsday Directors Russo Brothers posted on their Instagram that “What you’ve been watching for the past 4 weeks… aren’t teasers. Or trailers. They’re stories. They’re signs … Watch out. #DoomsdayHasBegun.” Which is wildly mysterious and slightly maddening. Now, talking to Empire (through IGN), Joe Russo expands on that a bit.
“Each of these trailers is narrative information, and it’s all part of (a) bigger story,” Russo told the magazine. “That’s why I would argue with that Doomsday has begun for you.”
So if we read it correctly, the Russians confirm the first implication that these teasers are pieces of information that an audience should see before the movie. We need to know that Steve Rogers is alive, well, and a father. We need to know that Thor is fighting for his daughter. We need to know that Professor X and Magneto are still old friends, and Cyclops is pissed. And we need to know that Ben Grimm meets the Black Panther in Wakanda. But are those scenes or bits of information left out of the movie?
“Look, the movie is very complicated,” Russo continued. “We think one of the best ways to celebrate what the movie is is to give the characters their own space and highlight some moments.”
Can’t help, Joe. Didn’t help at all.
I have a feeling Marvel fans will be talking about these teasers forever. Even after a full trailer drops later this year. And maybe even, if the implications are accurate, when Avengers: Doomsday hit theaters on December 18. Because, in fact, “Doomsday has already started” for us all.
