Real Madrid Defender Dean Huijsen has apologized for a racist post on social media that has sparked outrage in the Far East.
Huijsen took to Instagram on Saturday evening and reposted a film review of an Asian movie. Images on the post show screenshots of comments sections containing racist slurs, such as “You can blindfold him with dental floss.”
This comment is associated with a derogatory description of the shape of the eyes of Asian people.
Huijsen has since deleted the post and issued an apology that read: “I sincerely apologize to my Chinese friends. Earlier, I inadvertently reposted a post containing offensive content, which was completely unintentional, and I apologize for the inconvenience caused.”
Asian fans disappointed by domestic apology
The apology was posted on Weibo, a platform mainly used in China, and not on the player’s or club’s more globally followed accounts such as X, Facebook or Instagram.
This has led to more backlash, especially at a time when Madrid have been very vocal in their support for winger Vinicius Jr.
UEFA is investigating the claim. Prestianni denies any wrongdoing.
Huijsen is currently sidelined with injury and did not play in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Osasuna – a defeat which saw Madrid Leaving the top spot in La Liga follows Barcelona win against Levante yesterday.
The 20-year-old has made 18 appearances for Madrid in La Liga this season – his first at the Santiago Bernabeu following a £50million move from Bournemouth last summer.
