Things are strange saw in recent years. After the relationship between Twisted Pictures and Lionsgate collapsed and Retrieved Seen XIwith this, it takes some time before James Wan He and Leigh Whannell seized the franchise that they first did in 2002. So it is only fitting that they directly participate in the next steps of the franchise.
During a screening of the original saw at the Sundance Film Festival, a fan asked the pair about the future of films. Wan revealed that he and Whannell will reteam for the next film, although he did not confirm if they will direct and write as they did the first. He also teased that this new episode will “return to the spirit of the original (saw).”
Since it’s still early in the process, Wan wouldn’t say whether that means continuing Jigsaw’s long-running story or starting anew, though he did note that it wouldn’t be a proper film in the series without Jigsaw in some capacity. Either way, they “are known to have a lot of love for the world, (and we) will be thoughtful and respectful of what fans love about the soap character of the entire franchise.”
Interestingly, he concluded by saying the purpose of making “another scary saw movie.” Later sequels became more focused on the traps and the terrifying scenarios that the victims were stuck in, moving things from scary to bloody. Again, it’s unclear what this means for the story and how Jigsaw is involved — the series has tried slow reboots in the past with Jigsaw and spiral, neither of which was completely taken with the audience and led to Saw X back before the killer died. But let’s wait and see what Wan and Whannell have in store and what their new approach to scares is.
