The One Thing You Should Toggle Before You Transfer Money Between Venmo and PayPal

People have been waiting for years, and it’s finally here: Two of the most popular payment platforms, PayPal and Venmoyou are allowed to send direct payment between them. The feature is working now, so keep your apps updated — and watch for an important privacy switch to flip.

You can now find a Venmo user from your PayPal app (and vice versa) and send cash directly to that person with a few taps. But if you’re going to do that, you first want to make sure you have all your ducks in a row and the right settings are integrated into your game. Here’s what you need to do first before using apps and switching between them.

Longtime Venmo users will remember how annoying it can be Venmo automatically publishes payment details to everyone you connect with, something Venmo has been improving on in recent years, but can still be a source of frustration.

We’ll wait until November to investigate every detail, but there is one critical visibility setting that all users should be aware of. PayPal users seem to be able to find any Venmo user if they have the right phone number, which can facilitate certain scams or lead to spam.

You can adjust this option by going to your Venmo app, selecting Settings (the gear icon), then Policythen navigate to your Find Me options, where you can restrict who can find you on PayPal. Just don’t do it: Expect a Venmo update in November to use this option.
