The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) has officially adopted the 1-800-MY-RESET number as the National Problem Gambling Helpline.
The number is now live and working to receive calls, it is designed to be memorable and easily accessible to the public. This is also the latest step in NCPG’s ongoing modernization efforts.
Any call to the 1-800-MY-RESET number will connect people to National Problem Gambling Helpline Network which is a single point of access to 14 contact centers throughout the United States. It is staffed by trained professionals who meet internationally recognized helpline quality standards.
The number is completely free and available 24/7, while promising confidentiality and providing support and referrals to local resources.
“Problem gambling support should not be limited to one instance or one definition of harm,” SAYS Derek Longmeier, President of the NCPG Board of Directors.
“1-800-MY-RESET reinforces that the National Problem Gambling Helpline is available at any stage—whether a person is worried about themselves, worried about a family member, or just looking for reliable guidance.
The old National Council on Problem Gambling number is still available
Previously used numbers or access points, including 1-800-522-4700, will remain active. While the council said it encouraged states and regulators to approve and promote the new number, it explained that broader adoption and promotion will vary by jurisdiction due to state-level regulatory requirements and policies.
Speaking about why this is important, NCPG Executive Director Heather L. Maurer, MA, CAE said: “With gambling now more accessible than ever, the National Problem Gambling Helpline is a critical lifeline.
“Making the number easy to remember will help ensure people across the country can easily connect to high-quality, confidential support when they need it.”
In September, the NCPG loses access to problem gambling hotline at 1-800-GAMBLER after a judge ruled that control of the amount should return to the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ).
For the past three years, NCPG has paid $150,000 annually to operate the hotline nationwide under a licensing agreement with CCGNJ. That license, however, expires in May 2025.
For decades, the National Problem Gambling Helpline has played a major role in promoting responsible gambling throughout the parimutuel betting, sports betting, and online casino communities.
Looking ahead to the rest of the year, and next year, more education and awareness efforts will be launched.
