‘The Florida Man’s House’ Is Florida’s Most Imaginative Thing, and It May Be Coming to Airbnb

Some of the fun with the whole “Florida man” meme died down when it became clear that the phenomenon arose because Florida’s unexpectedly strong open government laws make it easy to access arrest reports, which, in turn, makes it easier to incriminate people before they are found guilty (or not) in court.

But still, something is… different in America third most populous state. And while it’s true that those of us in the quiet old reasonable north sometimes dream of mowing down an entire peninsula, Bugs Bunny style, and drifting it into the Gulf of Mexico America, we also know that if we do this, we’re depriving ourselves of the kinds of stories you don’t find anywhere else.

Take, for example, the Tampa home apparently known as the “Florida Man’s House,” which is now on the market for the first time in decades. The property gets its name from its, um, charming decor, which includes a “pirate cave”, a room both themed around and literally built around a 1950s hot rod, a “Jaws tribute” in the backyard, and a whole bunch of taxidermy. McMansion Hell blog that’s not good of late, because this place is just begging to be given the whole “What is this???” treatment.)

Several local outlets have spoken to the home’s owner, Jenna Spencer, since then went to the market for, um, $420,000, and he explained Fox 13 Tampa that the unique way of decorating his home is the legacy of his late father. He says that the original reason for the transformation of what seemed to be a normal house into a residential equivalent to a theme park was, inevitably, a trip to Disney World: “That (trip),” he said, “inspired the cave of the haunted pirate,” which his father built in a hallway destroyed by a tree that fell during a hurricane in Florida.

For better or worse, the rest is architectural history. And look, as easy as it is to laugh at the craziness of the house, it’s a wonderful place to grow up (check out the sound system). Spencer became emotional when she talked about how the renovations started, “my friends started wanting to come over to my house more often.” Unfortunately, he said, the financial burden of maintaining the place became too much after his parents died in 2023. But in a completely modern twist, it seems that the Florida Man’s Home will be saved from the bulldozer: the house is already offered, and future buyers are reportedly planning to turn it into Airbnb.
