Former UFC star Derek Brunson recently disagreed with Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier on the nature of Petr Yan’s fight with Merab Dvalishvili, praising the Russian fighter for putting on a “clinic.”
Yan and Dvalishvili faced off in an exciting bantamweight title rematch in the main event of UFC 323 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. They first met at UFC Fight Night 221 in March 2023, with Dvalishvili winning a unanimous decision over five rounds.
Considering how their previous matches went, many expected Dvalishvili to push Yan to the limit again on Saturday. However, “No Mercy” put in a masterclass performance against “The Machine” and dominated for five rounds to become the two-time UFC bantamweight champion via unanimous decision.
Heading into the fight, veteran UFC commentators Rogan and Cormier seemed to suggest that the Jan-Dvalishvili fight was a close one. In the X post, Brunson disagreed with their sentiments and wrote:

“‘DC’ and Rogan talk about what a close fight it was. We must have seen two different fights! That was a tight clinic! #UFC323.”
Yan is now on a four-fight winning streak and has an impressive 20-5 professional record. The 32-year-old Russian fighter also holds the record for the biggest punch in UFC bantamweight history.
Meanwhile, Dvalishvili’s incredible 14-match winning streak came to an end. If he wins this fight, the Georgia-born wrestling phenom will make history by becoming the first UFC champion to defend his title four times in one year.
Dvalishvili specifically called for a trilogy fight against Yan in his post-fight Octagon interview (via @ChampRDS on X) and said:
“I was trying to (put on) an interesting fight and I lost today… Congratulations to him, but I wanted a rematch. I wanted to get the fight back… I didn’t make any excuses… I just wanted to make it interesting… He was a better fighter today.”
