Tawanda Maswanhise: Scottish Premiership Player of the Month sounds title race warning and discusses Motherwell’s future football news

Tawanda Maswanshis has warned Hearts, Celtic and Rangers that Motherwell are still in contention for the title.

The 23-year-old, who was named William Hill’s Premier League Player of the Month for January, believes the Fir Park club can still challenge for the top spot despite being 13 points behind the leaders.

Masvanshis scored five goals in four league games last month to help the club remain unbeaten this month, with Motherwell currently in fourth place – just five points off last season’s tally with 13 games remaining.

Motherwell drew 1-1 away at Rangersdespite playing the final 12 minutes of Wednesday’s game at Fir Park with 10 men.

he told sky sports news: “You saw it yesterday, one guy went down and everyone on the pitch at Motherwell, myself included, we worked really hard to get the point we deserved.

“We’ve been doing the same style of play all season and now you’re starting to see more results. You’re starting to see more success and we’re getting applause. That’s good.”

“A lot of people, a lot of players want to say it’s a Final Three game now, but we’re still behind.

“I honestly think we can score a few points and get in there. So, keep an eye on us and we should keep going.”

Maswanhise becomes the third consecutive Motherwell player to win the Player of the Month award after winning the award in November, while teammate Elliot Watt won the award in December.

He has scored 13 league goals this season and has become the top scorer in the Scottish Premiership.

It has been a fantastic campaign so far, with Maswanshis also scoring for Zimbabwe at the Africa Cup of Nations in December.

Masvanshis says his best goal of January came in the 4-0 win over Kilmarnock

That form has seen the likes of Rangers, Celtic and Anderlecht all linked with a January move for the player, but Motherwell insists he is not for sale.

he told sky sports news: “Honestly, I know there’s going to be speculation at clubs across the country – but I’m keeping my head down.

“You just have to play football. Let the football do the talking, everyone has heard that saying. I did well in January and I have to continue.”

Asked whether he would be in talks with manager Jens Bethel Ascu and the club over his future, he added: “Obviously, I always like to say I want to go to the next step. I want to play European football. This club is getting there. Hopefully we can play European football next season.”

“Like I’ve always said, at the start of the season I want to put my head down week by week. I don’t like to think too far ahead in the season because I’m going to be affected by my performance.

“It wasn’t difficult (dealing with speculation in January), but there was a lot of noise everywhere. I did manage to keep my focus on one game after another.”
