India election campaign gets off to a record-breaking start 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cupthe Wankhede Stadium – traditionally a highway for batsmen – turned into a graveyard for the chasing side. India’s gritty defense against the United States of America reshuffled the history books, recording the lowest total ever successfully defended in a T20I at this iconic venue.

Lowest defensive total in history in 5 T20Is at Wankhede Stadium

1. India vs USA(2026)

Score: India 161/9 | Result: India win by 29 runs

On February 7, 2026, the Indian team kicked off its title defense with a thrilling game. Captain Suryakumar Yadav was left alone after the US bowling attack dropped to a precarious 77/6, led by Shadley van Schalkwyk’s 4 wickets. Unbeaten with 84 goals from 49 goals Push India to 161/9.

In response, Indian bowlers proved why they are world-class. Mohammed Siraj returned after a long absence and took 3/29, while Arshdeep Singh killed off the top order of the American team. Despite a heroic 58-run performance from Milind Kumar and Sanjay Krishnamurthi, the US finished at 132/8, handing India a historic 29-run win and the lowest T20I defense ever recorded by the Wankhede.

2. India vs Sri Lanka(2023)

Score: India 162/5 | Result: India win by 2 runs

This is the benchmark for low-scoring wins for Mumbai ahead of the 2026 World Cup opener. In January 2023, India struggled at 162/5 thanks to late-night fireworks from Deepak Hooda (41 not out) and Axar Patel.

The chase continued till the last ball. Debutant Shivam Mavi smashed Lanka’s top order with 4/22. Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka came close to hitting 45, but Axar Patel kept his composure in the final over and restricted Sri Lanka to 160 runs to win by 2 runs.

3. South Africa vs Afghanistan (2016)

Score: South Africa 209/5 | Result: South Africa win by 37 runs

It sounds strange to call 209 “low total defense,” but that’s often the case at the Wankhede. Quinton de Kock and AB de Villiers powered the Proteas to a score of 209 runs during the 2016 T20 World Cup.

Afghanistan did not back down and reached 100 runs in just 8 overs. However, the experience of Chris Morris (4/27) ultimately told us that Afghanistan’s chase ended with 172 runs. At the time, it was one of the few instances of a team batting first surviving the dew of Wankhede.

4. India vs West Indies(2019)

Score: India 240/3 | Result: India win by 67 runs

In 2019, India proved that the best defense is a massive attack. Rohit Sharma (71), KL Rahul (91) and Virat Kohli (70 not out) combined to score a historic 240/3.

While West Indies are known for chasing huge totals, the pressure on the scoreboard was too much. Despite Kieron Pollard’s 68, the Windies were restricted to 173/8. It remains one of India’s most dominant defensive displays at the venue.

5. India vs England(2025)

Score: India 247/9 | Result: India win by 150 runs

At the beginning of 2025, India posted their highest ever T20I total of 247/9 at the Wankhede. On a night when every Indian batsman rushed for the fences, England’s world-class line-up collapsed under the lights.

The visitors were bowled out for just 97 runs – the lowest total against India at this venue. This game highlighted how even the biggest goal totals can be defended with ease when the Wankhede Stadium offers a little zip under the lights.
