Rutherford’s 76 and control of the spin ball helped the two-time champions beat the 2022 champions at Wankhede Stadium.

Sherfane Rutherford hit a fine half-century and Gudakesh Motie excelled in spin bowling as West Indies beat England by 30 runs in Group C of the T20 World Cup.

Rutherford smashed an unbeaten 76 sixes off 42 deliveries to set the stage for a total of 196-6 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Two-time champions West Indies returned to the field and dominated their opponents with spin and beat England for 166 in 19 overs to top the group with their second consecutive win.

England slipped to third place behind Scotland after suffering their first defeat at the World Cup.

“It’s disappointing. It’s never nice to lose a game but West Indies performed well,” England captain Harry Brooke said.

“Certainly we thought it was a chaseable total, but it didn’t dew and slide off the bat like we expected.”

Putting in the batting, West Indies lost both openers in the first seven innings.

Before Rutherford walked into Wankhede Stadium to light up the lights, Shimron Hetmyer (23) and Roston Chase (34) held the ship.

He shared 61 runs with Jason Holder, who hit 4 sixes on 33 off 17 balls to take West Indies to close to 200 runs.

Leg-spinner Adil Rashid was in fine form for England, conceding just 16 runs in four overs and taking the wickets of Chase and Rovman Powell.

England got off to a flying start but lost Phil Salt (30) in the fourth round.

Chase took Jos Buttler for 21 and left-arm spinner Mothy hit two strikes to turn the tide for England, who were slumped to 93 for 4 in the middle stages of the innings.

The situation called for caution and Brooke curbed his normal aggression appropriately, but the West Indian spinners would not be denied.

Moty (3-33) caught Brooke off his own bowling and Chase trapped LB Will Jacks to further turn the tide.

Sam Curran scored a brave 43 which was not high on the order but lacked support.

“I worked hard for the World Cup,” Rutherford said.

“I trust my process and when I play with a clear head I can score runs in the end. We were probably 10 runs behind what we wanted given England’s strong batting, but the players played well.”
