A driver was detained Wednesday night police say The man intentionally rammed his vehicle into the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters in New York City multiple times, damaging some doors at the Jewish site.

There were no apparent injuries, said Morty Seligson, a spokesman for the NYPD and Chabad Lubavitch.

The NYPD bomb squad examined the vehicle and found no explosives. The driver yelled to onlookers that the car was “sliding” and said something to police as he tried to stop the vehicle.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the incident is under investigation hate crime.

The U.S. Department of Justice also announced a civil rights investigation into the incident.

“I have directed @CivilRights criminal prosecutors to launch a civil rights investigation into this violent attack,” Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon said on X.

“This is deeply alarming, especially given the institution’s profound significance and history to so many people in New York and around the world,” he continued. “Any threats to Jewish institutions or places of worship must be taken seriously. Anti-Semitism has no place in our city, and violence or intimidation against Jewish New Yorkers is unacceptable.”

Mamdani added: “I stand with the Crown Heights Jewish community and I thank our first responders for their quick action. I will update New Yorkers as we learn more about this incident.”
