PARAMARIBO (Reuters) – Suriname’s fugitive former President Desi Bouterse has died at the age of 79, the country’s government said on Wednesday, nearly a year after he went on the run from authorities to avoid prison following his murder conviction of 15 political activists in 1982.

“The government has been informed by the family and its own investigations of the death of GD Bouterse, former President of the Republic of Suriname,” Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin told Reuters.
