New England Patriots quarterback Derek Meyer revealed he received a painkiller injection for his injured throwing shoulder before the team’s 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 60.
Meyer threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and the game was all but over, he was sacked six times, threw one of his two interceptions for a touchdown and lost a fumble in the 23-year-old’s Super Bowl run.
The Patriots quarterback was limited in one practice and then in another during Super Bowl week after Meyer landed on his right shoulder while running late in the third quarter after the AFC Championship Game win over the Denver Broncos.
“I shot it, so I didn’t feel much,” Meyer said of his shoulder. “It feels good to leave, it feels good.”
Asked if he felt the injury limited him, who went 27-for-43 for 295 yards in New England’s drubbing, Meyer added: “I think it’s hard to say that.
“I feel good enough to play. I’m not going to put the team in danger by not being myself. I just didn’t play tonight.”
Trailing 12-0 at halftime, the Patriots punted eight of their first nine passes and totaled 51 yards, the fewest in a first half in the past 35 Super Bowl games.
Meyer also became the first player since Tom Brady against the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII to be sacked three times in the first four drives of a Super Bowl.
“It does hurt,” an emotional Meyer told reporters afterwards. “They played better than us tonight.
“Families travel all the way to see us play. Don’t ruin their night because it sucks and it’s painful.
“What do I want to get? I want to go back to the start and redo it. There were a lot of plays that could decide and change the game – a lot of plays in the first half where I felt like I could have made a better pass or a better decision.
“It really comes down to who’s shooting and who’s not shooting and they made a difference tonight.”
Meyer added: “What a journey it’s been for the whole team and myself.
“I love this team and those guys in the locker room. We left it all on the field and just didn’t perform well. We didn’t play our best and that’s what happened.
“It’s going to sting for a while, but that’s what you signed up for.”
Meanwhile, NFL Coach of the Year Mike Vrabel gave a big picture look at the season, as he guided his team from a 4-13 record in 2024 to a 14-3 record and an unexpected berth in the Super Bowl.
“I’m proud of what they’ve done. I’m disappointed, just like they are,” Vrabel said. “I remind them that we are 307 days into our long-standing, successful relationship and project.
“Disappointment is normal. We must all be disappointed and upset together.
“Like I always do, I tell them I appreciate them and I’m grateful. I’m grateful that I get to coach them.
“Like every year, someone is going to lose this game. We have to remember that feeling and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
