Italian integrated energy company Eni has shipped the initial cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Nguya FLNG floating facility, marking the start of gas exports for Phase 2 of the Congo LNG project.

The ceremony took place in Pointe-Noire and was attended by the President of the Congo, Denis Sassou N’Guesso, and the CEO of Eni, Claudio Descalzi.

Now commercially operational, this initiative aligns with Eni’s goal of increasing its LNG portfolio to 20 million tonnes per year by 2030.

Phase 2 of the project increases the liquefaction capacity to three million tonnes per annum (mtpa), converting to 4.5 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas per annum, tapping the resources of the Nené and Litchendjili fields in marine license area XII.

The Congo LNG project underlines Eni’s ability to transform gas resources into strategic assets for local and global markets, focusing on profitability and environmental performance.

Phase 1 of the Congo LNG project, which began with the Tango FLNG liquefaction unit, was commissioned in December 2023, just over a year after the definition phase of the project.

Meanwhile, the commissioning of Phase 2 came just 35 months after construction began on the Nguya FLNG unit.

Operating in the Republic of Congo since 1968, Eni leads associated and non-associated gas production with capital production expected to reach 110 kboed by 2026.

Eni supplies gas to the power plant in Congo, which generates around 70% of the country’s electricity.

Eni’s CEO, Claudio Descalzi, said: “Today we reach a very important milestone thanks to the relationship of trust built with the country’s institutions and local communities. We have been the only company that has invested in gas to develop the national market and reduce the routine twist.

“This decision, taken more than 20 years ago, led us to discover sufficient volumes to also allow export. Phase II of the Congo LNG project was delivered in record time compared to the industry average, increasing the availability of gas on international markets and contributing to Italian and European energy security, while generating concrete benefits for the local economy.”

In December 2025, Eni signed a long-term LNG sales agreement with Thailand-based energy operator Gulf Development Company.
