Author Stephen King pays emotional tribute to director Rob Reiner The New York Times reported on Tuesday that the filmmaker and his wife were murdered over the weekend.
The “It” and “Carrie” screenwriter described Renner inviting him to a Beverly Hills hotel in 1985 to watch a rough cut of his film “Stand By Me,” based on King’s 1982 novella “The Body.”
King recalled feeling “deeply affected” when watching the film for the first time and said Reiner had adapted his “nakedly autobiographical story” very well.

“After the movie, I surprised myself by thanking Rob and giving him a hug.” Kim wrote. “I’m not usually a hugger, and I don’t think he’s used to hugs either. He stiffened, mumbled something about being glad I liked it, and we both walked away.”
He continued, “I obviously wasn’t over what I was feeling. I walked into the nearest men’s room and sat in a stall until I got a hold of myself. Nostalgia can be dangerous when it’s close. I’m not quite sure what I mean, but it felt real.”

Renner later directed the 1990 film Misery, based on King’s 1987 novel of the same name. King wrote that he was “equally delighted but not emotionally devastated by the film.”

King added that he also participated in a documentary “about how much we dislike Donald Trump” at Renner’s request.
“Rob, with his usual grace, got a lot of flak and slander for this on Twitter. (I refuse to call it an “That boy who cried was me. It was Rob Reiner who brought it to the screen,” King wrote.
