England swept Sri Lanka 3-0 in the T20 series as they staged a stunning comeback from a low-scoring death set at Palleke to win by 12 runs.
Harry Brook’s decision to bat first after winning the toss (having batted first in his previous two wins) initially looked counterproductive, with England trailing 60 for 6 on the slow wicket of the Palakle Cricket Stadium.
Sam Curran top-scored with 58 off 48 deliveries, opener Jos Buttler (25) and Liam Dawson (14) were the only other players to score in double figures, while Dushmantha Chameera (5-24)’s career-best figures helped England win 20 Limit the score to 128 wins and 9 losses in the round.
Sri Lanka seemed to be in dominance until consecutive losses from Kusal Mendis (26) and Pawan Ratnayake (13) gave them a 62-4 lead, and Will Jacks (3-14) then claimed crucial scalps from Kamindu Mendis (14) and Janis Lyanaki (17), leaving them six runs behind and 32 runs away from victory.
The hosts’ hopes were derailed when Jacob Bethell (4-10), who later removed Maheesh Theekshana, took 3 wickets in 5 balls, saw Sri Lanka bowled out for 116 in the final over.
