While it’s not unusual for an app to shut down, when there is an active user base, apps usually provide some form of communication from their operators. But Musicboard users say they haven’t heard anything, leaving them to reach out to the press for help contacting someone, if only to let them export their data.

Some users have organized an unofficial “Help Save Musicboard” initiative to bring more attention to the matter. The group is led by Musicboard user known as Lavarini and run by volunteers.

TechCrunch contacted Musicboard to help these users get answers and provided a brief statement. However, the statement did not clarify longer-term issues and dismissed the outages as “temporary downtime.”

The statement, shared from the Musicboard team’s email address and signed “Musicboard,” said the following:

“The app is not closed. The servers had a temporary downtime, which is now quickly fixed. And we are working together with the Google Play team to get the app back there. The app will not be closed without a respectful timeline for users and official communication. The app remains live.”

Follow-up questions were not answered.

the builders of Musicboard, Johannes Vermandois and Erik Heimer, are involved in other projects. The number AI app, Frank AI, was set to be acquired by a company called Freedom Holdings, Inc., but the potential acquirer concluded the letter of its purpose in September 2024. Dreamsands, Inc., the company that publishes Frank AI on the App Store, also operates another app, Helman AI therapist.

In the email, Lavarini said that efforts by users to help save the app will continue.

The Help Save Musicboard initiative “aims to support awareness and discussion about the long-term sustainability of the indie app Musicboard and its community,” Lavarini wrote.
