Authorities said the twin-engine plane crashed in a residential neighborhood of Gramado shortly after takeoff.

A small plane crashed in a tourist hotspot in southern Brazil, killing all 10 people on board and injuring more than a dozen people on the ground, officials said.

Brazil’s civil protection agency said on Sunday that the twin-engine Piper PA-42-1000 hit the chimney of a house and the second floor of another house shortly after taking off from Canela before crashing into a building in Gramado. A shop in a main residential area.

Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite told a news conference that the plane’s owner and pilot, Luis Claudio Galeazzi, and nine members of his family were killed.

Wright said 17 people were injured locally, 12 of whom are still receiving treatment in the hospital.

Galeazzi’s company, Galeazzi & Associados, confirmed that its CEO and Galeazzi’s wife and three daughters were killed in the accident.

“Luiz Galeazzi will forever be remembered for his dedication to his family and his extraordinary career as the leader of Galeazzi & Associados,” the company said in a LinkedIn post.

“Galeazzi & Associados is deeply grateful for the outpouring of solidarity and care from friends, colleagues and the community during this time of great distress. Our sympathies are also with all those in the area affected by the accident.”

Gramado is located in the Serra Gaucha Mountains and is a popular destination for holidaymakers, especially during the Christmas period.

More than a year ago, Brazil suffered its worst air disaster in nearly two decades when a twin-engine plane crashed in the southeastern city of Vignedo, killing all 62 people on board.
