Shreyas Iyer named captain of Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2025


Shreyas Iyer He has officially taken over as the captain of Kings XI Punjab for the 2025 IPL season. This big news comes just after he led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to win the IPL title in 2024. Surprisingly, KKR fired him after that successful season. However, Kings XI Punjab wasted no time and bought the Mumbai batsman for a jaw-dropping INR 2,675 crore in the 2025 mega auction.

Iyer has had a stellar 12 months

The 30-year-old has had a phenomenal year in domestic cricket and the IPL. Apart from leading KKR to IPL glory, Iyer also led Mumbai to victory in the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He is also an important member of the organization ranji trophy and the Mumbai team that won the Iran Cup.

Iyer expressed his excitement about taking up his new role with Kings XI Punjab. “I am honored that the team has had confidence in me. I look forward to working with coach Ponting again. The team looks strong with potential and proven performers. I hope to repay the trust shown by the management to achieve our goals first win,” Ayer said.

Reunited with Ricky Ponting

Kings XI Punjab target first IPL title

Kings XI Punjab are yet to win their first IPL trophy. They came close to the title in 2014 but lost to KKR in the final. However, PBKS CEO Satish Menon believes that the introduction of Shreyas Iyer could change their fortunes.

“We have identified Shreyas as our captain and are pleased with the auction results. He has proven that he can master the format and his vision for the team is perfectly aligned with our goals. With him and Ponting joining forces again, we I believe our team has a solid leadership team to guide us to our first championship.”
