Shakur Stevenson He is often championed for his willingness to take on all opponents, but the 28-year-old has announced that he will not face one fighter. Now, the newly crowned WBO super lightweight champion may be ordered to fight that man.
Stevenson jumps to super lightweight and replaces Teofimo Lopez Won the WBO super lightweight crown and became the third youngest four-division world champion in boxing history.
The WBC has since decided to strip Stevenson of his lightweight world title, a move that left the Newark southpaw wondering whether he should return to 135 pounds without the belt, stay at 140 pounds and defend his new title, or move up again and compete at welterweight.
Meanwhile, on Stevenson’s undercard, his good friend and former WBO lightweight ruler Keyshawn Davis announced himself as a threat to the super lightweight throne, defeating Jamaine Ortiz in the co-main event of the bill.
As a result, as Stevenson expected, Davis has become the number one contender in this level of WBO. Stevenson plans to let Davis return to lightweight after a break to fight for the gold belt.
However, the WBC’s decision disrupts that idea and opens the door to a scenario where Stevenson could be ordered to defend his new title against a boxer. He has previously declared that he would not enter the war unless he was provided with $500 million.
“I understand how you might feel when you don’t understand someone’s relationship with someone, but this is my brother, my right-hand man. Why would I have to perform in front of you guys, why would I have to fight my brother in front of the whole world, which could screw up our relationship because at the end of the day I’m as competitive as he is and there has to be a winner and a loser.
“I’m not going to let a gangster get the best of me, I don’t care who it is. So, at the end of the day, it’s going to be a barrier between me and his relationship, and I don’t care what other people feel about it.
“I wouldn’t (about fighting Keyshawn) unless mother**** gives us $500 million or something crazy to support our family for the entire rest of our lives and the generations after that, that’s what it is.”
Thankfully for Stevenson, time is on his side, as the WBO is unlikely to order this fight in the near future, and Davis isn’t expected to stay at 140 pounds long enough to get it authorized.
Instead, it is believed Davis will later move up to welterweight Called for a showdown with WBO welterweight champion Devin Haney Shortly after his victory over Ortiz.
