Two Senate Republicans are urging their House counterparts to reject a Trump-backed shutdown deal unless it includes Homeland Security Funding and election integrity legislation.

Sens. Rick Scott, R-Fla., and Mike Lee, R-Utah, called on House Republicans to boycott the Senate-passed appropriations package, which includes a bill to fund five agencies including the Pentagon, as the partial government shutdown continues.

They argue the plan needs to be retooled and must include a revised version of the Protecting American Voters Eligibility Act, known as the Save America Act, and a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill that was removed after Senate Democrats threatened to blow up the government funding process.

Doing so could extend the expected short-term closure.

Scott said congressional Democrats “will never fund the Department of Homeland Security” and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He voted against the plan twice, arguing that the spending levels would further swell the country’s eye-popping $38 trillion national debt and that billions of dollars in earmarks betrayed the Republican Party’s previous vows of fiscal austerity.

“Democrats will win if House Republicans don’t reintroduce the Department of Homeland Security bill, increase the Save America Act, and eliminate wasteful earmarks,” Scott said. “We must protect our homeland, secure our elections, and end reckless spending now!”

Lee also rejected the package in the Senate over earmarks. He also agreed with Scott and pushed for inclusion in the Save America Act, which he introduced with Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas.

“To my fellow House Republicans: Please reinvest funding for the Department of Homeland Security and add the Save America Act,” Lee wrote on the X.

Any changes to the agreement, such as including the Save America Act or adding a Homeland Security Act, will send packages Return to the SenateSchumer and his caucus will likely reject it.
