Moderate Democrats in San Francisco are boycotting progressive candidates, fearing local left-wing politicians could undo the work they’ve done over the past four years after a surge in support in the city. Homelessness and crime, reported on Friday.

Better San Francisco Neighbors has raised $10 million for local elections in an effort to prevent progressives from being re-elected and move the city “away from a more centrist course.” According to Politico.

Politico reports that a group of political moderates in the city hopes to defeat the union’s “CEO tax” proposal in the June primary.

The group fears the proposed tax, intended to offset federal funding cuts affecting the city’s budget, will stifle economic recovery and exacerbate the city’s downtown office vacancy problem.

Neighbors building a better San Francisco The organization supports “public safety, serious solutions to homelessness, quality public education, fiscal responsibility, and good government in our city,” according to its website.

“It’s important to have people holding down the line,” said Jay Cheng, the group’s director.

“This is a wave coming toward us. It’s coming west,” he said.

“Board of Supervisors Chairman Raphael Mandelman, who leads the centrist majority at City Hall, said he was concerned that the Democratic midterm elections were largely focused on the president. Donald Trump could overshadow local concerns that helped moderates gain power amid the city’s pandemic-era recession,” Politico reported.

“It’s hard for a center to stay afloat in a place like this,” Mandelman said. “We have pragmatists and utopians.”
