Sachin Tendulkar makes heartwarming gesture for U-19 World Cup winner Ayush Mhatre

India U-19 captain Ayush Mhatre took to his official Instagram account on Monday, February 9, to share an emotional video documenting one of his most memorable days as a cricketer.

In a warm gesture, Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar presented a specially signed jersey to Mhatre after the success of the Indian team in the recently concluded U-19 World Cup, where the boys in blue defeated England to claim the trophy.

In the pinnacle showdown of the tournament, India dominated in a dominant manner, largely thanks to 14-year-old opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who smashed an impressive knock of 175 in 80 innings, the best batting record in the history of an U-19 World Cup final. Mhat contributed a half-century as India confirmed a total of 411 against nine wickets in the 50-over limit.

The target proved too big for the English batsmen and they started chasing it in the second innings. England U-19s, who were under pressure, scored 311 runs in all 10 games, which was a decent total but not enough to overtake India.

The young team of the Indian cricket team clinched the title on February 6 and three days later, on February 10, Mhat shared the video with the caption: “I grew up watching you guys through the screen. Today, I stand in your house holding a part of your journey in my hands. Thank you sir, for this honor. I will carry on this honor with the same respect that you have shown to Indian cricket over the years.”

Ayush Mhatre excels as batsman

Ayush Mhatre has contributed well to the success of the team as a batsman. The 18-year-old batsman scored 214 runs in seven innings at an average of 30.57 and a strike rate of 113.22, including three half-centuries. Maitre lifted the trophy as the sixth captain of the India U-19 national cricket team, after Mohammad Kaif, Virat Kohli, Umkhet Chand, Prithvi Shaw and Yash Tool.

The emerging talent will return to action with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the 2026 IPL season. He joined the team midway through the IPL 2025 season, replacing injured captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. The addition of Mhat proved to be significant for the future of the team.

CSK expresses confidence in Ayush Mhatre

The right-handed batsman played seven games for CSK in IPL 2025 and scored 240 runs in seven innings at an average of 34.28 and a strike rate of 188.97. These statistics are based on 94 innings and half-centuries.

Ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, Chennai Super Kings have retained Myhat’s contract for next season, which shows their faith in his talent. For CSK, in the last edition of the Indian Premier League, he was noticed mainly for his attacking batting style. But against India, he tried to bat and maintain a less reckless attitude. It will be interesting to see in which role CSK hopes to use the batsman in the upcoming season.
