Here’s what it looked like on Sunday, February 1st:
struggle
- A Russian attack in Ukraine killed one person and injured seven others in the Dnipropetrovsk region, according to Ukraine’s emergency services. High-rise buildings, homes, shops and cafes were also damaged.
- The ministry said shelling in the Zaporozhye region wounded another person and the explosion also destroyed three residential buildings and 12 houses.
- Vadym Filashkin, the governor of the Donetsk region, said Russia carried out 13 attacks in multiple regions, killing at least two people and wounding five others.
- Filashkin said a total of 172 people were evacuated from the front lines, including 35 children.
- The Russian attack hit state rail infrastructure in the Zaporozhye and Dnipro regions, a strategy Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said was aimed at “severing connections between our cities.”
- A total of 303 combat encounters took place on Saturday, including 38 air strikes, 119 guided bombs, 2,510 kamikaze drones and 2,437 attacks on settlements and troops, Ukraine’s General Staff wrote on Telegram.
- The Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday that its forces had captured the villages of Petrivka in Ukraine’s southeastern Zaporozhye region and Toretsk in the eastern Donetsk region. Al Jazeera was unable to verify this claim.
- Russian state news agency TASS also claimed that Russian troops have taken control of at least 24 Ukrainian settlements since the beginning of this year, most of which are located in the Zaporozhye region.
- A Ukrainian drone struck a car in Russia’s Belgorod region, injuring two people, the TASS news agency reported.

- At least 3,500 buildings in parts of Ukraine, including Kiev, faced power outages throughout Saturday due to a faulty interconnection line with Moldova, officials said.
- Kiev Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko wrote on Telegram that the Kiev subway was closed, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate and cutting off water and electricity supplies in the capital.
- Klitschko said that although the capital’s water supply was restored at around 10:30 pm local time (20:30 GMT), energy workers continued to restore heat to about 2,600 homes.
- The president said Ukraine was investigating the outage but “as of now, no external interference or cyberattack has been confirmed.” “Most of the signs are weather-related: ice on the lines and automatic shutdowns.”
- Serhii Beskrestnov, technical advisor to the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, announced on Facebook that at the request of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, SpaceX has temporarily restricted the operation of its Starlink system in Ukraine to prevent Russian drone attacks.

- U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant, Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner and White House senior adviser Josh Grunbaum also attended the meeting.
- In a night speech, Zelensky said Ukraine was “in regular contact with the United States” and “waiting for them to provide specific details” on further meetings, expected to take place next week.
- “Ukraine is ready to work in all effective forms,” he added. “What matters is the outcome, and the meeting taking place.”
- Writing on X, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha spoke with Liechtenstein Deputy Prime Minister Sabine Monauni to discuss “the progress of peace negotiations and the urgent needs of Ukraine’s energy system.”
- “We are also particularly concerned about further sanctions pressure on Russia and the international community’s joint efforts to hold it accountable,” Sibiha said.
