Manchester City A dramatic 2-1 win over Liverpool At Anfield, overturned a late deficit with two goals in the final minutes to keep pace with Arsenal Premier League title race.
The match started with the usual high intensity, with City creating the first clear chance. Within two minutes, Bernardo Silva slipped Erling Haaland through on goal, but Allison reacted quickly to palm away the striker’s low effort.
Liverpool responded through Mohamed Salah, who chased Alexis McAllister through the ball before recovering to keep out Mark Gueye’s effort behind.
City controlled large parts of the first half and generated the better chances. Haaland was again denied from a tight angle after meeting a cross at the near post, while Omar Marmoush fired narrowly wide after setting up inside the box.
Liverpool’s best start came from transitions and pressure situations, including a moment where Salah almost lobbed Gianluigi Donnarumma after the goalkeeper was caught out of position.
Liverpool improved significantly after half time. Cody Gakpo sent a header wide from close range, Hugo Ektic shot just wide of the far post after a flat move, and Donnarumma made a vital save to keep out Ektic’s rising effort.
At the other end, Antoine Semenio forced Alisson to stop through traffic, while Ryan Cherky, introduced from the bench, added more creativity to City’s attack.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 74th minute by a moment of individual quality. Dominik Szoboszlai pounced on a free-kick from around 30 yards and unleashed a powerful effort that curled around the wall and clipped the post on its way, leaving Donnarumma unmarked and giving Liverpool a 1–0 lead.
The city, however, received a late response. In the 84th minute, Cherky delivered a forward ball which Haaland turned into the path of Bernardo Silva.
The midfielder slipped behind the defense and slotted past Alisson’s legs to level the score at 1-1.
The decisive moment came deep in stoppage time. Mathias Nunes chased down a loose ball near the right byline and was caught by Alisson as the goalkeeper lunged out. The referee pointed to the spot and Haaland stepped up to drive a left-footed penalty into the corner in the 93rd minute for his 21st league goal of the season to put City ahead for the first time.
Liverpool pressed hard for an equalizer during extended extra time. McAllister came closest when he fired a long-range volley into the top corner, but Donnarumma made a strong one-handed save to keep it out.
Tempers flared late on in the night when Szoboszlai was sent off after a ball-on-the-ball clash with Haaland as City tried to break for a third goal.
City are now six points behind Arsenal and have the chance to extend that gap to three with a win in midweek.
