represent. jasmine crockettTexas Democrats claim that some Republicans will “absolutely” vote for the freshman congresswoman in the general election as she works to become the Democratic nominee for the state’s Senate.
On MS NOW’s “The Weeknight,” Crockett was asked by co-host Michael Steele if Republicans could trust her to be “the representative they need in Washington” if she were to run in the general election.
“Oh, sure,” Crockett replied. “Now, Michael, you could maybe talk a little more about this because I think the Democrats know what the Republicans want.”
She argued that Republican voters “are not looking for Republican elites” and if they were, “they could go and get the real thing.”

“What they want is someone they know who they are,” she argued. “I got text messages from Republicans making it clear that if someone does make the cut, they will absolutely vote for me because they know who I am.”
While Crockett acknowledged that she may not be the “perfect candidate” for Republican voters, she insisted that neither is President Donald Trump and that he can still win over their support and win the White House.
“When Republicans go out and vote for a less-than-perfect candidate like Donald Trump, they’re not striving for perfection, as Democrats typically are,” she claimed. “So, while I may not be their perfect candidate, they know it. I know the issues. They know I know how to work across party lines when necessary.
“They also know I don’t get into trouble. When you’re Texas, it’s a matter of you not getting in trouble with Texas.”
DecemberCrockett said in an interview with CNN that she is not trying to win over supporters of President Donald Trump.
“I don’t know that we’re necessarily going to convert all of Trump’s supporters,” she said. “That’s not our goal.”
The Texas congresswoman is running against Rep. James Talarico, D-Texas, in the Lone Star State’s Democratic Senate primary.

Despite Crockett’s meteoric rise in American politics, some on the left have begun to question Crockett’s ability to run in the general election.
last weekLiberal New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg believes former “Saturday Night Live” star Bowen Young and his podcast co-host Matt Rogers were “right” to criticize Crockett’s Senate campaign on their “Culturalist” show earlier this month.
Goldberg noted that while the controversy surrounding Yang and Rogers’ comments may seem trivial, it is “worthy of attention” because “underlying issues could cost Democrats their Senate seat this fall.”

The two comedians faced backlash after Rogers urged listeners Don’t donate to Crockett’s campaigncriticizing those politicians who “only care about themselves” in everything. Young agreed with Rodgers, but both men apologized for their remarks days later.
As Goldberg points out, Young and Rogers faced resistance from Crockett and his supporters, who Blame the hosts Racism and misogyny.

“But Rogers and Young were right to be skeptical of Crockett, who almost certainly could not win the election in Texas,” the columnist argued. “Those who disagree have every right to criticize them and me. But progressives shouldn’t let regressive Internet discourse styles stop them from pointing out the obvious.”
Goldberg asserted that “it wasn’t race and gender that made Crockett a bad candidate,” but rather her “theory of how Democrats could win Texas was wrong.” She said that while she can understand why “a lot of Democrats like Crockett,” she also understands why others are put off by her style of politics.

“Some of her insults were in bad taste — she called wheelchair-using Texas Gov. Greg Abbott a ‘Hot Wheels’ — but it’s easy to see why Democrats who feel they’ve been brutalized by Trump want supporters willing to lay low,” Goldberg wrote.
In addition to Crockett’s sometimes brash style, the columnist noted that Talarico has proven he’s capable of doing what Crockett has yet to do – turn red seats blue.
