Real Madrid suffered a shock defeat at home to Getafe, their second consecutive defeat in the Spanish Football League, leaving them four points behind leaders Barcelona.

Martin Satriano’s superb first-half volley helped Getafe beat their rivals 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Monday.

Real Madrid dominated possession and controlled the game from kick-off but failed to convert pressure into goals, squandering several chances in a bad-tempered game.

In the 39th minute, Alvaro Arbeloa’s side were exposed when a half-ball clearance cross landed on the edge of the penalty area and Satriano fired a fierce volley into the top left corner.

Madrid’s poor night was made even worse when striker Franco Mastantono was sent off in stoppage time for an apparent dissent.

“Obviously, it was a game where we could have done better, but I thought my players did their best and we had more clear chances than they did,” Arbeloa told reporters.

“However, in football it is not enough to deserve it and Getafe played a great game.”

With French superstar Kylian Mbappe recovering from a sprained knee in France, Madrid attack alongside Gonzalo Garcia and Brazilian star Vinicius Junior.

At half-time, with the Bernabeu fans booing, Arbeloa introduced Carvajal, Huyson and Rodrygo, but the changes had little effect.

Real Madrid’s defeat at Osasuna at the weekend allowed rivals Barcelona to leapfrog them in the title race, with Hansi Flick’s side extending their lead by beating Villarreal on Saturday.

Vinicius, who is in excellent form in 2026 after a shaky start to the season, spurned a great early opportunity. The winger fired home, but David Soria saved brilliantly with his legs.

Arda Guler’s brilliant roulette almost earned Madrid the breakthrough but Soria tipped over the Turkish striker’s shot.

Getafe were upset by a painful collision between Madrid defenders Antonio Rudiger and Diego Rico, with the German’s knee hitting the Spaniard’s head.

Uruguayan striker Satriano broke the deadlock with a fine strike after compatriot Mauro Alambari headed the ball into the edge of the area.

Soria performed well to save from Vinicius Junior in the second half and the Brazilian called on Real Madrid fans to show more support.

However, although Rudiger almost equalized the score with a header, the team did not bring much excitement to them.

Madrid travel to Celta Vigo in La Liga on Friday before facing Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Champions League last 16 with a somewhat chaotic performance and uncertainty over top scorer Kylian Mbappe’s fitness for the match.

Mastantono was sent off in stoppage time, seemingly for something he said to the referee, and Getafe were reduced to 10 men before Adrian Lisso kicked the ball away and was shown a second yellow card.

“No one here will admit defeat, this is Real Madrid and you don’t give up until the last game,” Arbeloa added.

“Four points is the distance we can shorten and we will fight for it.”

José Bordalás’ Getafe move up to 11th and celebrate their first win at the Santiago Bernabeu since 2008.

“When you come here it’s very difficult to score. I have to congratulate the team for the job they did defensively. Then we scored and we could have even scored another goal at the end,” said Getafe defender Kiko Femenia.
